![]() Want a step up past the edition XS? Big gap for gaming and nothing beats them until the HE1000se but I'd bet money the Edition XS can outperform and outresolve most people's signal chains.Submit Build Help/Ready post Submit Troubleshooting post Submit other post New Here? BuildAPC Beginner's Guide Live Chat on Discord Daily Simple Questions threads They're under $400 and stomp the shit out of HD800s and have planar speed and detail that the HD800s doesn't even come close to. Most linear stage I've heard up through $4000, flawless imaging unlike the Sundara and Ananda which have bad frontal imaging and a stage size like the Arya that is balanced in depth. Want something cheap that does it all? Edition XS. It's a parlor trick and after the honeymoon phase of "oooh this sounds so big" wears off, problems become pretty obvious. Absolute stage size means nothing if it isn't linear and accurate. There are a lot of headphones that are both cheaper and better than the HD800s. They seem impressive if you haven't had many headphones but when you get down to the nitty gritty they have an exaggerated stage and distance is skewed really hard past around 5-10 feet and is not accurate at all. The R70xs are a best of both worlds headphone for me.Įveryone here is painfully wrong about the HD800s. The midrange centric sound of the HD660s made them my preference for music. ![]() I very much prefer flat/neutral sounding headphones for music and, while overall pretty sonically accurate, the somewhat artificially exaggerated upper treble and bass of the X2s cause the midrange to seem a bit withdrawn. The flip side, for me anyway, is that I never cared for the X2HRs for music. Tonal balance and transient response will both improve some. However, the 50mm drivers are pretty damn big, so if you're able to throw them more than minimal power they do benefit from it. Low impedance and decent sensitivity coexist well with phones and motherboards as sources. On the powering/driving front, anything can drive them decently. Bass is also punchier than your average openback headphone, which is nice for explosions and gunfire. For gaming, that makes it easy to pinpoint where noises are coming from. They have forward sounding treble which is great for imaging and detail, but without annoyingly excessive sibilance (piercing S sounds). Prior to the R70x, they were my go-to for gaming and movies/tv. They're also easy to drive, which is a plus. I picked mine up on sale on Amazon for $125. They really are very good in that regard, especially for the price.
